We ate here on a busy night, although it wasn’t particularly busy when we first arrived. The server took our orders quickly, carefully repeating them to make sure they were correct. First course came, fine, although our nasu dengaku wasn’t as good as usual -…the miso on top was very scant in some places. Then we waited. And waited. And waited. They seemed to have forgotten our sushi order. When it finally came it was completely wrong. ????? So we waited and waited some more. And waited. At this point I’d like to say that, if a restaurant messes up, forgetting an order or a customer, or getting the order wrong, they should be trained to come over and fess us, and apologize, and they should offer the customer some small treat to make up for the mix up or delay. Without that, a bad experience is just compounded. When our sushi order finally came it was delicious. But then we wanted to order dessert, and waited and waited again for someone to approach us. Finally we snagged a server to order dessert. We also had to keep either asking the servers to clear our plates, or put them on a nearby empty table ourselves. This restaurant is a neighborhood gem, and does have wonderful food, but the best food cannot completely save a dining experience if the service is so diffident. And I’ve seen this lack before in other restaurants – if the servers or the cooks make a mistake they should own it and then try to make up for it. Otherwise, they run the risk of losing a customer.
Family of four for dinner. We ordered gyoza, yakitori, karage, tempura, agedashi dofu, and a sushi roll. The food was terrible. The skin of the gyoza was terribly tough. The karage and tempura were a poor attempt at Japanese food. They have no clue really….I lived in Japan for 7 years and this is the worst Japanese meal I have had out of that country. It was expensive for what we ordered. The comment \question from my daughter says it all, she asked afterwards, “I thought we were having Japanese food for dinner”. It is her favourite cuisine and when she says that it says it all in my opinion. This place is a disaster.
This restaurant is close to the office, so I occasionally get invited there! Prices are reasonable. Menu has a great selection, I like their boxes. Services if fast and friendly. No complaints!
Genji is our go-to place for really special occasions. The takeout selection and quality has always been consistently great. In many years of coming here, they’ve never made a mistake on the requested food, and we’ve never been disappointed. Highly recommended.
