In 1994 we traveled to Portugal and wandered the country for three weeks enjoying the sites and the food. We’ve been Portugal fans ever since. Every time we’ve come to Vancouver, B.C. since 1994 (at least 8 times) we’ve dined at the Portuguese Club. We…almost didn’t go this time as we thought they were closed (we’d recommend a few more light bulbs toward the front entrance). The Portuguese Club seems to attract regulars, something we’ve noticed each time we’ve been there. The servers were very personable. Our food was wonderful! My husband ordered Carne de Porco a Alentejana (Pork and Clams) and I ordered Shrimp Piri Piri and Portuguese Fries (the potatoes are cut crossways like a potato chip). The Shrimp was excellent. The fries seemed to be tastier after I dragged them through my garlicky, piri piri flavored oil. We are so glad we went to the Portuguese Club again!More
Delicious food and great service. It is our favorite place on Commercial Drive to have a dinner or lunch, prices are very reasonable.
The Portuguese club offers very good quality at reasonable prices and a different menu few restaurants in town offer like bacalau and portuguese sardines! One of my favorites!
Let me preface this review by saying I work in the restaurant industry. I am very patient with servers and kitchen wait times because I know how hard it is. I also understand that during lunch service on a Wednesday you cannot be expected to…be served by the A team. But and however I do expect a modicum of proficiency. Our server was a red faced zombie. He tried to take our order before he had even given us menus. When or food arrived he had forgotten my fries and served my college salmon when he had ordered sardines. Because we had alredy waited 25 minutes for food my companion just accepted the salmon. Even though we reminded the manager that my fries hadnt come, they didnt correct the mistake, he just walked off muttering. No fries. My other companion had the salted cod, which wasnt prepared correctly (far too salty and suspiciously fishy). Our other companion who ordered his steak rare, had his steak half rare and half well done, which can only mean they are cooking on a warped fry pan. I mean nothing was right. Everything was crazy…food and service. The bill was presented to us in full, in spite of the numerous errors and farsical service. I dont seem to understand the other glowing reviews, they must be going through a phase or just having an off day…
If you are looking for an Americanized version of am ethnic estaurant then this place is no good for you. Here everything is Portuguese (except the servers). As soon as you get inside, there’s no host or hostess.. You kind of have to go to…the counter and ask where you can be seated. The food takes its time to arrive, but when it lands on the table, the next minute is gone. Specialty dishes like ‘pork and clams’, ‘bacalhau a casa’, ‘bitoque’, ‘bacalhau a Brás’ and ‘piri piri prawns’ are to die for. The service is not the main strength of this place, however if you forgive that, you will be astonished by how great the food tastes, for a very cheap price. The portions are huge too, thanks to Portuguese hospitality! Come here without pretensions and you will walk out the he door very pleased. The small appetizers given at the table at the beginning are free of charge too. Extra bonus.
Once every other month, perfect to remind you why it’s important to travel to the home country and eat traditional foods from your area. The club makes a good “pork & clams” . The traditional Portuguese steak ? is also highly recommended and popular. Now…go experience it ?More
I love the clams and pork dish. Lots of clams and the taste was wonderful with pork chunks. The grill steak was ok. The chicken mushroom was tasty, a bit salty. The potato fries were crispy. Finding parking can bit hard, go early. Atmosphere was…ok.
Quiet and spacious older venue in the heart of commercial drive. Great food. Inexpensive house wine. TVs if you want to watch the game and drink coffee… Traditional Portugese food of chicken, pork, fish, steak with fries… nice servers… only a few of them behind…the bar so be patient. Thank you!More
If you like traditional Portuguese food then this is the place. Pork and Clams are amazing, service was great. This is now my go to place for lunchtime specials..
